Fracture mechanics of viscoelastic polymers

Molten polymers are viscoelastic fluids with properties somewhere between those of a solid and a fluid. At high deformation rate, a polymer fiber will break like a solid fibre starting from a crack, originating at the surface of the fiber.

A group of researchers at the Chemical Engineering department at DTU, Lyngby, is using a Photron UX100 high-speed camera to study crack formation and propagation in molten polymer fibers.

 

High-resolution, high-speed visualisation of droplet dynamics

SPS01 Syringe PumpDroplet microfluidics is an important technique for encapsulating very small samples like single cells, proteins or magnetic beads.

Droplets, with volumes in the picoliter to nanoliter range, are generated in a planar microfluidics chip at a rate up to several thousand per second. A Photron AX200 high-speed camera working at 10.000 to 50.000 fps is used for analysing and optimizing droplet dynamics.

SPS01 Syringe PumpPå Institut for Biologi på SDU i Odense studerer forskerne, hvordan dyr orienterer sig og kommunikerer med omverdenen ved hjælp af lyd. En af dyrearterne er flagermus, der er mestre i at fange deres føde i absolut mørke ved ekkolokalisering. Et af værktøjerne er high-speed optagelser i infrarød belysning.
